Weddings at The Commandery

Become part of history…

An inspirational setting

The Commandery has long been at the heart of momentous events, since its early days when monks sheltered travellers to the city within its walls. Features remain from its use as the Wylde family home, which saw the union between two important households – the clothier Thomas Wylde and Dorothy Berkeley of Spetchley. The combined family Coat of Arms that were once on the bedstead are still present, and include the image of three ‘martlets’ (swallow-like birds) that symbolise knowledge and adventure.

A unique occasion tailored to you

Whether you envisage a string quartet serenading you from the Minstrel’s Gallery above the historic Great Hall, or an intimate ceremony overlooking the beautiful herb garden, we will help you to plan a memorable occasion for your guests.

…your special day in a superb setting

The Medieval Great Hall

The Great Hall is at the very heart of The Commandery, featuring a traditional 15th century timbered roof and majestic Civil War armour. With light filtering in through the delicate painted glass of the Oriel window and a Minstrel’s gallery, it is a truly unique space. The hall is a versatile entertaining area which can be used for the ceremony, relaxing, dining or dancing.

The Garden

The charming enclosed gardens behind The Commandery overlook the picturesque Georgian wing and can accommodate a marquee.

The Oak Apple Suite

The Oak Apple Suite is a small, peaceful and private set of rooms that are separate from the museum’s visitor route. There is a lovely entrance hall where drinks can be served, a comfortable side room with sofas in which to relax, and the ceremony will overlook the beautiful herb garden through French windows.

The Queen Anne Room

For a more intimate ceremony, a small but perfectly formed room is available, featuring a stunning fireplace that provides a splash of grandeur to the bright and inviting space.

Pay us a visit

We would be delighted to talk through your ideas for the perfect ceremony, tailored to you, involving the combination of rooms that suits your unique requirements best. Play your part to look after a special building

By choosing to get married at The Commandery, you are helping us to take care of it for generations to come, thank you!

To help us look after this Grade I listed building, we ask our guests to understand that we are unable to accommodate naked flames or decorations that pierce the walls of the building, and that smoking is not permitted on site. We also want to bring history to life for everyone, which means that we are open to visitors every day (except Mondays) until 5pm, and we adjust the visitor route accordingly when a wedding starts before this time. Finally, we respect our neighbours’ peace as we are based in a residential area and so finish our events by 11pm.

The Commandery has been approved by Worcestershire County Council as a venue for marriage in pursuance of Section 26(1)(bb) of the 1949 Act, and the formation of civil partnerships under section 6(3A)(a) of the 2004 Act.
