What’s on for families this May!

From Civil War soldiers to ancient Romans and block printing, there is so much to enjoy at the museums in the May half-term holiday!

At The Commandery

Celebrate the anniversary of the restoration of the crown in 1660 in a brilliant day out for all the family!

There’ll be:

  • Fantastic reenactors to encounter
  • Musket firing in the gardens
  • Living history camps to explore
  • Pike and cannon drills for children (and grown-ups!) to get hands-on with
  • History talks about Oak Apple Day and the English Civil War – including a walk and talk up to Fort Royal
  • Wonderful refreshments available at Commandery Coffee

10am – 4pm. General admission applies and can be purchased on the day or online in advance.

Follow in the footsteps of real Civil War soldiers!

Have a go at pike and cannon drills, play games soldiers would have played, and help King Charles II escape from the Parliamentarian army.

Join soldier school sessions from 10.30 – 11.30am and 1.30 – 2.30pm Tuesday to Friday during the May half-term holiday.*

£4 per child. No need to book for the sessions– just turn up and get stuck in. General admission also applies and can be purchased on the day or online in advance.

At Worcestershire County Museum at Hartlebury Castle

Block printing at Hartlebury Castle

Experiment with block printing in the May half-term holiday! Create your printed design on fabric and take it home to enjoy.

Whole-site admission to Hartlebury Castle applies + £3.50 each for block printing (includes the Designs and Patterns Search Challenge).

Can you find all the designs, shapes, and patterns hidden around the museum?

Explore the Bishop’s Palace, County Museum, and beautiful grounds including the magical woodland play area.

If you’re visiting on Bank Holiday Monday 27 May – Thursday 30 May, try your hand at block printing too!

At Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum

Wednesday 29 May, 10.30 – 11am

Learn all about Ancient Rome in the May half-term holiday!

In this half-hour session, get up close to objects the Ancient Romans would have used and discover how they used them, and why. Bring along all your biggest questions!

This session is aimed at 7 to 11 year olds.

See real Roman mosaics and pottery in the museum while you’re visiting, delve into fun activity bags available from the shop, and follow the trail all about Roman coins too.

£2.50 per child (accompanying adults do not need to book, but must stay throughout the session). Book online here.

Thursday 30 & Friday 31 May, 10.30 – 11.30am

Travel back in time to Ancient Rome at the Art Gallery and Museum this half-term holiday!

In these sessions, children can get hands-on with clay by making a Roman-inspired mosaic square and a pinch pot to take home.

See real Roman mosaics and pottery in the museum while you’re visiting, delve into fun activity bags available from the shop, and follow the trail all about Roman coins too.

Go back in time to Ancient Rome at the Art Gallery and Museum this half term!

Get creative with these activity bags and make your own Roman brooch, laurel crown and paper mosaic.

Each activity bag has multiple themed activities inside, and the Activity Space in the museum is fully equipped for young creatives to get going on their making.
